The calendar has flipped to 2018, and with Spring Training games beginning on Feb. 23, there is a large pool of unsigned free agents still on the market. The next couple of months figure to be very busy as the Hot Stove truly heats up, so here’s a look at notable free agents that remain available, along with which teams may be in pursuit

Now that it’s officially 2018, we can ask what will be by far the most important question of the upcoming calendar year: Which starting pitchers are primed for a breakout season? We’ve got five good names ready for big years.

When Haley Alvarez finished her internship with the Oakland A’s two years ago, she began searching for her next opportunity, understanding the A’s didn’t have any full-time positions available at the time. But a couple of weeks later, she received a call from the club’s general manager, David Forst, asking her if she would like to attend scout school, with the A’s as her sponsor. That started Alvarez on a path that eventually led her back to the A’s in a full-time role.

Enrique Hernandez rode on the City of Hope float in Monday’s Rose Parade to raise awareness for cancer research. He was joined on the float by two notable cancer survivors — his father, Enrique Sr., and former Dodgers general manager Fred Claire.

As the midnight cleanup goes on and the countdown begins for pitchers and catchers reporting to Spring Training, the first order of this New Year is to reset and pose 10 questions that loom especially large right now.

New Year’s resolutions typically have an expiration date of, you know, six or seven hours, depending on the lines at your favorite fast-food place. We do them anyway, because we’re optimists at heart. So here’s to your better self in 2018. These lists don’t have to be all about cheeseburgers and interval training, though. Baseball needs ’em as well. Where we’ve been and where we’d like to go, etc. Let’s consider 10.

When the Winter Meetings came and went with the top free agents still unsigned, we were sure it would mean an unusually active time around the holidays. But now we’re moving into the New Year and still the Hot Stove has generated dozens of questions for every answer. With only about six weeks to go before players head to camp, here’s a half-dozen teams to keep your eyes on.

Does every great outfield catch require a dive? We know that they don’t, but if a good fielder simply gets to a ball and makes it look easy, it might go unnoticed. Let’s fix that right now with a look at some of the best catches in 2017 you didn’t notice.
